Gynaecology

Unidad de Obstetricia y Ginecología

Gynaecology is a medical and surgical speciality that treats female reproductive system diseases (vulva and vagina, uterus and ovaries).

This way, gynaecologists are the specialists dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as:

Experts recommend the first visit to the gynaecologist to be after the first sexual relationship, or even before to resolve doubts or concerns teenagers might have, about development, the menstrual cycle, intimate hygiene or contraception.

Additional Information

Cancer of the cervix develops from precancerous injuries that can be detected by cytology on a regular basis.

These injuries appear as a consequence of a persistent infection by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is acquired by having sexual intercourse.

The HPV vaccine can prevent infections of the types of HPV included in its composition (16 and 18) which cause more than 70% of the cases of cervical cancer.

In addition, it also protects partially against other types of HPV not included in the vaccine and that cause approximately another 13% of cervical cancer cases.

Breastfeeding can decrease the risk of breast cancer.

Breastfeeding can decrease the risk of breast cancer, especially if the duration of breast cancer lasts for more than a year.

There are several reasons why breastfeeding protects the health of the breast:

  • The continuous production of milk by the cells of the breast limits its ability to alter its behaviour and malign
  • During breastfeeding women have fewer menstrual cycles, and therefore lower levels of estrogen
  • Most women who breastfeed have healthier lifestyles during this period.

On top of that, breastfeeding is the most appropriate feeding method for the development of babies.
